Hi everybody, I’m thrilled to announce our second Glamour Photography Workshop for 2011 right here in Auckland(Waiheke Island). The dates are Saturday September 3rd – Sunday September 4th.

The format of this workshop will be similar to the Mangawhai Beach Workshop as we have received lots of positive feedback from it. The workshop is run in small groups over the weekend and provides essential hands-on style learning to help you gain experience for ‘your own’ shoot. We’ll also be covering lighting setups with 1,2, 3 and more light setups with two experienced models (Melanie J. & Dasha G.). You’ll get to see how we go about running a shoot from planning, to the final retouching process.

We are limiting attendance to the first 8 people who sign-up. Last time round it was filled in a week and we are expecting this to sell out quickly.

If you are interested in attending or have any questions or comments, please feel free to get in touch. My email: david@dfimages.co.nz or Ed’s: ed@edwardhor.com

We would also like to invite you to join our Facebook group, there, you can see more comments and what went on in our last workshop.

I look forward to seeing you at the workshop.

Thanks David and Ed for the workshop, could not have expected anything better. Bach was awesome, location was fantastic and content was very very useful, models were HOT…. Was awesome chatting and takin photos with everyone as well, was awesome learning and discussing stuff with ya.

Thanks David and Ed, that was an awesome weekend, really well set out and learned more than I ever thought I would TBH (To Be Honest)

…great workshop. The best thing was that it did NOT exceed my expectations – it showed that being a successful glamour photographer IS obtainable and the way you both were completely transparent with your workflow and process was amazing!

Thanks again for all your and Ed’s help, I really learnt a lot from those few days and also what areas I need to work on in order to develop more as a photographer.

My assignment yesterday, was a photo shoot with two beautiful young talents, Renee and Claudia, both 1st time model (can you believe that?).

Again, I chose my trusty location, Herne Bay Beach. The reason I love shooting on Herne Bay Beach is because it’s a North facing beach, so no matter if it’s a morning or an afternoon shoot I will always have sun light coming from the water side and I can position the models to use the sun as hair light (as long as it’s on a sunny day of course). This gives me a big advantage where I only need to setup one light as main or fill and I can spend more time working with the model instead of setting and metering multiple lights.

The only problem with Herne Bay Beach is a super steep walkway to the waterfront. It’s only a 5 mins walk but when you travel with a few battery packs, sandbags, stands and large modifiers etc. . .it becomes a very tough exercise. Luckily, my good friend/assistant, Clinton Chang, was there to help.

We started the shoot with Renee. The rain was still dripping so we took shelter around the boat shed at the end of the beach. After a few warm-up head/portrait shots the sun was out and we quickly moved towards the beach. I put my new Profoto Giant 1.5m reflector on the Pro-B as main. It was my first time using the Giant and both Clinton and I took awhile to figure out how to put it up, but once we figured it out the process was surprisingly easy. I am confident that next time we can have it all setup within 30 secs, which is actually easier than setting up a softbox.

The light coming off from this modifier was simply amazing, a very even and large light source but with incredible high-light detail. Here are a few of my favorite shots from Renee.

Camera settings were 1/125, iso 100 and f16.

Next up is Claudia. I decided to start with a slightly different lighting setup with Claudia as she said she is interested in getting into the fashion industry. With this on mind I used the Profoto soft-white beauty dish on Acute-B 600 pack and changed the settings to 1/60, iso 50 and f8. This allowed more ambient into the picture and with the strobe set at lowish power just to fill, resulting a more natural, fashion/editorial feel. Just how we wanted 🙂

Lastly, we moved back to my Giant reflector setup and I asked Claudia to try a glamour beach pose, I think she loved it. Well, at least I did!!

Here is a shot of my Giant setup, picture courtesy of Clinton. You notice the reflector is taller than me when I am leaning over?

Overall a pretty good shoot for a Wednesday afternoon. Thanks again for Renee & Claudia, you girls did an awesome job and it was my pleasure working with you both. And of course, thanks Clint and sorry about dragging you out from your real job haha.

Saturday, the 2nd of April, sunny day with perfect weather for an on location shoot. But this time there was no beach, instead we were shooting in the Winter Garden, Auckland Domain. Subjects, David and the Smith Family.

David and I first met in the 2011 4 & Rotary Nationals. For those who are familiar with the import scene in N.Z. you would probably know that David is one of the big guy behind 4 & Rotary (normally you see David running around in the event co-ordinating race, bikini comps, shows etc). David invited me to shoot in the National this year with a special assignment, shooting 10 beautiful Deluxe model search girls in the event. It was my first time shooting so many models in one day, no doubt it was an awesome time and walking/shooting around with that many models in a huge event was definitely quite a memorable experience!!

Anyway, David approached me in the 4 & Rotary South Island Champ, he asked if I am keen to shoot for him again? Instantly, I replied, hell ya!! with 10 beautiful models’ pics flying through my head. However, it’s a little different this time round. David would like a special family portrait session with her partner and their family members. Sure, I have done lots of family portraits during my many wedding shoots so we locked in a date and had the location sorted.

Back to Saturday, after a quick introduction to all family members, I found a perfect place to start. It was right in front of the Winter Garden glass house. I carefully arranged everyone’s position so the sun was right behind the group to give a nice hair-light, then I used my Pro-B head/pack with a massive 135cm Elinchrom octa box as main to lit the whole group. With 1200w/s of power in disposal, I had plenty of choices. I ended up shooting at f11, iso100 with a shutter between 1/125-160. The balance between ambient and the strobe was quite pleasant so it was only the matter of getting everyone to smile and posing for the picture. Everyone did a great job, including the baby, you can see from the 3rd shot, she even gave me a thumb-up hehe!!

Here are some shots from the session. Thanks again for giving me the opportunity to shoot with you guys, it was lots of fun and good to see a different side of David Cooper, the family-loving-sweet side.

Last Friday I spent the afternoon in Herne Bay Beach, Auckland, shooting with Alexandra Moulden.
A young, talent and super sweet 19 y.o. studying her 2nd year of visual/web design degree in Massey University.

We shot on a simple 2 lights setup. For main, I used a Profoto Pro-B with B2 pack and Elinchrom 100cm deep-octa with just inner diffuser. Second light was the 600w/s Profoto Acute pack with zoom reflector for hair/kick light. With a lighting ratio of around 2:1 between the main and hair light, the setup was easy enough to control but also been very efficient.

Here are a few pics from the shot, what do you think?

Alex is also in the current Miss Tui 2011 Comp: http://miss.tui.co.nz/misstui/277.aspx, lets give her our votes and support this super hawt web-designer to come!!
